The explosion occurred at around 3pm local time (1pm in the UK) at the dam on Lake Suviana, Bargi, close to to Bologna and Florence, say hearth brigade officers.
Utility group Enel Green Energy stated a fireplace savagely broke out on one of many transformers on the eighth flooring of the hydroelectric energy plant.
The prefect of Bologna, Attilio Visconti, stated the transformer blowing led to severe flooding on the ground under.
Officials say searches will continue for the coming hours and will see them attain depths of 131ft underground in the rescue operations.
It is feared that the three lacking could possibly be trapped beneath the water because of the floods.

These rescued have been flown to an area hospital with many suffering severe burns.
