Drunk purchases are often an pointless spherical of tequila photographs or a McDonald's on the best way residence – however for eight males in Darlington, a couple of beers led to buying a racehorse.

All of it transpired when the group of buddies met up for some socially-distanced drinks in a garden, while the pubs have been closed because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Many beverages later, Anth Freeman made his transfer pitching his 'daft concept'. The civil servant had grown up watching the horses and 'having a flutter'. Now, he needed to take issues further by investing in a racehorse, however, he didn't need to do it alone as firstly, he couldn't afford it, and secondly, he couldn't be bothered to do all of the organising alone.

He'd been pestering his associates on and off for years, but this time, in 2020, the group have been receptive. 'Something clicked in another way,' he informed Metro.co.uk.

The fact that horse house owners have been nonetheless allowed to attend race tracks, which have been closed to the general public, and the bars have been open, definitely helped. A number of weeks later Anth, Ste Wake, Kev Wake, Baz Bozeate, Jeff Wake, Stephen 'Canine' Russell, Nick Lyons and Mike Parker had their horse – Showtime Mahomes – named after Kansas City Chiefs quarterback& Patrick Mahomes because of a lot of the group being huge followers, they usually referred to as themselves The Muffed Punt Partnership after an American soccer term. They have been also now working with coach, Grant Tuer, who has turn out to be keen on the group and their antics.

The animal has offered the group greater than they ever expected once they parted with £8000. 'Showtime was low cost. He has raced towards horses that have value £140,000, but he's our underdog,' Anth fondly advised us. Their unimaginable story has been was an ITV documentary It's Showtime! but there's extra to it than viewers might initially realise…

In 2021, the horse started racing – it came second in its first two races and gained the third.& The highlight for the lads is undoubtedly his triumph on the York racecourse in 2022, also known as 'The Ascot of the North'.

The moment of pure delight came whereas Anth was experiencing the worst yr of his life. At house, he was battling look after his son Charlie, 14, who's autistic and non-verbal.

Every four weeks, Charlie was getting sick on account of modifications in his testosterone levels, which led to painful ulcers in his mouth. Annoyed at being unable to communicate how he felt, Charlie would self-harm and lash out at these around him. His younger brother Jack, 12, was pressured to stick with his grandparents for his security, while Anth and his wife Kate can be caring for Charlie day and night time.

'We'd hunker down with Charlie and attempt to get over these spells.

'I had nowhere to go to. I couldn't go to friends and family because Charlie might harm them, and it felt like professionals couldn't assist,' recalled Anth.

'I felt so alone. I used to be miserable.'

The hardest moment came after Charlie was given morphine to be sedated in the hospital. The medicine solely lasted thirty minutes, and then Anth needed to hold Charlie pinned down so he wouldn't harm himself or others. Anth and Kate then stayed awake by means of the night time to watch Charlie.

As his eyes glazed over, he added: 'But even in these lowest moments, I had a bit little bit of hope and one thing to sit up for with Showtime. It stored me going and stopped my mind from overthinking.

'It was something constructive I might speak with Kate and Jack about too.'

It wasn't simply watching the horse compete that brought Anth joy, it was attending to spend time together with his buddies.

Overnight stays in several elements of the country to attend races led to an extended period of time collectively than they often had. Away from their normal surroundings, they began to open up extra.

'Up within the north, men don't actually speak in any respect. The lasses might go for a coffee and a chinwag, however we are likely to hold all of it in. Nevertheless, all of us naturally started speaking to one another about our points,' he defined.

'It simply helps when you already know someone else goes by means of stuff. In a weird means it's a comfort once you realise it's not simply you that's obtained s**t happening. Everybody's received s**t happening.'

Mike suffered devastating losses in 2020 (Image: ITV/Stuart Wooden)

One other individual within the group who discovered consolation in the males's firm is Mike, who misplaced his mother and spouse Barbra to cancer inside 5 weeks of each other in 2020.

He had the 'darkest days' after 'dropping the 2 most essential ladies in my life'.

'I was devastated. My household have been there for me, however I virtually didn't need to burden others so I handled my feelings alone,' he stated.

Although he wasn't present on the fateful night time when the racehorse concept got here to fruition, he was invited to hitch by former work colleague Nick. When the textual content got here, Mike took the opportunity to deliver some mild back into his life.

Win or lose, accountant Mike is comfortable to be out of the house together with his new buddies. He enjoys consuming the 'free grub', consuming champagne and most of all, the camaraderie.

'It's been a dream. I'm pinching myself. I wouldn't change it for the world. The only thing I might change it for is to have the ladies back,' he shared.

'Now I don't go on holiday with Barbra, lately out on the races are my holidays. They're days I gained't overlook, though I don't keep in mind every little thing because of the drinks.'

He continued: 'Even once we're not at the races, the lads are texting to ask how I am, or we're arranging to see Showtime at his secure as it's therapeutic spending time with him.

'We will open up on things we might not really feel snug talking about at the pub. Although we take the mick out of each other, we are there when it's needed.'

Additionally they show up for taxi driver Jeff who just lately misplaced his 'soulmate' brother Michael, and Canine, who rebuilt his life after spending time in& jail& for dealing& medicine.

By way of the great and the dangerous, as well as the euphoric (when Showtime gained at York, which the group class as among the best days of their lives) they stick collectively.

'We hit the jackpot,' Anth excitedly said.

'Our horse has dipped since and the romantic aspect of me thinks that's as a result of he gave all the things to win that day because it's what we all needed.'

Showtime might retire after the current season, they usually plan to deal with him in a secure close by so all of the house owners can still see him. But their story isn't over – they've already bought a second horse using their winnings, who's presently unnamed.

Anth is hoping for an additional American Football-inspired identify, however Mike has another concept: 'Band of Brothers as a result of that's what we are.'

He added: 'We're simply working-class men who've been capable of experience proudly owning a racehorse collectively – that just doesn't occur to individuals like us. I'm enjoying each moment as a result of life is short. I know that more than most.

'Barbra wouldn't have needed me moping. She'd have been so completely satisfied I discovered this group.'

The lads will probably be endlessly tied, with or without the horses and that's the lasting impression of Showtime Mahomes.

'He's greater than just a racehorse,' Anth said.

It's Showtime!& is on ITV1 on Tuesday, April 16, at 9pm
